How Scentsy Became Part of Finding Myself Again
This is the longer version of how becoming an Independent Scentsy Consultant in Australia in 2019, with a $200 start, social media, friendship and a fragrance business, became part of rebuilding my confidence and finding a piece of myself again.
2019 was not a good year
At the beginning of 2019, I wasn’t doing well mentally. I had reached a point where I had lost a lot of myself and I needed something that was mine.
Scentsy wasn’t some carefully researched business decision. My daughter Jamie had sold Scentsy before, and my half-sister was the person who eventually signed me up.
I gave myself a $200 budget. That was it. I wasn’t starting with a huge customer base, a fancy business plan or plans to run parties every weekend.
I started with samples, social media and the hope that maybe I could make something of it.
At that point I had absolutely no idea just how much this little decision was going to change.
Traditional parties were never going to be my thing
When I started Scentsy, I was homeschooling Jordan and traditional home parties simply weren’t going to fit my life.
So I didn’t build my business that way.
Social media became my party room. I shared the products I genuinely liked, talked to people, made samples and built relationships without needing to pack up the car and spend my weekends running parties.
Then 2020 happened.
While so much of the world moved online during COVID, the way I had already been running my business suddenly made a lot more sense. My business grew quickly and eventually my team grew to more than 80 people.
For someone who had started with $200, some samples and absolutely no grand business plan, that still feels a little ridiculous when I think about it.
Somewhere along the way, I started finding myself again
The biggest change Scentsy made in my life wasn’t a rank, an award or a sales number.
It was me.
When I started in 2019, my mental health was in a very different place. Over time, having something that was mine gave me a reason to talk to people again, something to work towards and a community I never expected to find.
I started travelling. I made friendships with people I probably never would have met otherwise. I went to events, got dressed up, laughed a lot and slowly became more confident in myself again.
My life changed physically too. I lost around 50 kg, but the change I’m proudest of isn’t what happened on the scales. It’s that the woman who struggled so much in 2019 gradually started recognising herself again.
Scentsy didn’t magically fix everything. Life still happens and business has had plenty of ups and downs. But it became one part of finding myself again, and that is something no sales figure could ever properly measure.
The business changed, and so did I
There were years when Scentsy absolutely flew.
My own team grew to more than 80 people, business was busy and for a while it felt like everything just kept moving forward.
But businesses change. People’s lives change. Mine did too.
My team became smaller, my rank changed and there have definitely been times when I’ve wondered what on earth happened to the business I once had.
But I’m still here.
And one thing that hasn’t disappeared is my Scentsy family. Some are on my team, plenty aren’t. They’re people I’ve met through Scentsy who became genuine friends, the people I travel with, laugh with and look forward to seeing again.
The difference now is that I’m not trying to recreate 2020 or somebody else’s version of success. I’m building something that fits my life now, with customers who trust me and a business that still feels like me.
I’ve learnt that starting again doesn’t mean everything before it was wasted. Sometimes it just means you know a lot more the second time around.
Seven years later, I’m still here
I joined Scentsy in 2019 thinking I was starting a small side business.
Seven years later, I’m still here because it became far more than that.
It gave me confidence when I needed it, friendships I never expected, opportunities to travel, a reason to keep showing up and something that was mine.
The business has changed a lot over the years and so have I. I’m not chasing the exact version of success I had before. I’m building something that fits who I am now.
That means honest customer service, real product experience, helping people without pressure and building relationships that last longer than one order.
Scentsy is still part of my life because I still enjoy it. And after everything it has brought into my world, I think that matters more than any rank ever could.
I never built this business the traditional way
No home parties. No pretending there was only one way to build a Scentsy business. I found a way that worked around my life, using social media, samples, relationships and being myself.
